$300 million in locally owned renewable energy projects promoted by rural communities.
April 30, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 30, 2013

$300 million in locally owned renewable energy projects promoted by rural communities.

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO - The Rural Community Power Producers Association (RCPP) through its member co-operatives is prepared to submit at least 15 applications for wind projects in the next FIT window that will inject close to $300 million in revenue into Ontario’s rural communities.

Some direct benefits from these projects include:

·       Local ownership

·       Supplemental income opportunity

·       Community fund established for each project to benefit the host community

·       View shed fund – Every landowner in proximity of the project receives a payment for the life of the project

RCPP wants to improve the negative perception associated with large companies installing huge wind farms, by representing locally owned renewable energy co-operatives that have a range of 15% to 100% local ownership in the projects.  In addition, RCPP project sizes are purposely minimized to be nonintrusive as possible to the landscape and the people who live in the area.  The potential power generation for Ontario if all proposed co-op projects are granted contracts, is approximately 450,000 megawatt hours per annum of clean renewable energy which will power approximately 35,000 homes over the next 20 years. Since 2009, the Ontario Power Authority has encouraged and supported these types of community renewable energy initiatives, especially ones that have local input.

“We believe that if renewable energy projects are going to be installed in rural Ontario that there would be more support from residents if they had  direct ownership and interest in the project” said John Andrews president of IPC Energy, the company responsible for developing these renewable energy projects.

“These types of locally owned renewable energy projects is taking the right steps to improve the quality of life for not only the local host community, but for all Ontarians by investing in our future energy needs in an environmentally responsible manner while keeping ownership local” said Tom Lewis project manager.
